Bagan

bagan

Bagan, situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River, 293 kilometres south of Mandalay, is the most amazing site in Myanmar. Covering about 42 s.q kilometers and with over 2000 religious monuments which are in different sizes and shapes and were built between 11th to 13th Centuries AD, Bagan is the richest archaeological site in South East Asia.

Tradition had it that Bagan was founded in 2nd Century AD. But it would be better to date the foundation of Bagan in AD 849. It was not until King Anawrahta who ascended to the throne in 1044 that Bagan rose to the golden era.

It was Anawrahta who founded the First Myanmar Empire, carried out religious reforms by establishing pure Theravada Buddhism and made Myanmar historic period came into near-perfect light. But the downfall of Bagan met in 13th Century due to the invasion of Mongols.

Bagan, the cradle of Myanmar culture, casts a spell over its visitors from which they could not escape: there’s nowhere, perhaps, a sight so striking as the view across the plain of Bagan. It is Bagan that impeccably offers you the unsurpassed holidays that you have never had before in your life time.
