Myanmar Currency

Myanmar Currency The Myanmar currency is called “Kyat”. Visitors can purchase “Kyat” at hotels or at authorized money changers. The biggest denomination is 10000 Kyat. Credit cards and Travelers check are not widely accepted in Myanmar except at some major hotels.

Within Myanmar, FEC (Foreign Exchange Certificate) is used as the same value as USD so far. FEC and USD are accepted by all the hotels, restaurants and payment of admission fee etc.

Starting from 01 Oct 2011, Myanmar Foreign exchange counters open in Yangon at Theinbyu street where Foreigners and locals can exchange USD, FEC, Euro and Singapore Dollar (cash only) with prevailing exchange rates. Some private banks also have license to trade foreign currencies and you could find the currency exchange kiosks of those banks in major cities.
