Pakkoku (Magway Region)

Pakkoku situates at the western bank of Ayeyarwaddy river and at the northwest of the ancient city, Bagan which is on the other side of the river. The old city of Pakhangyi situated at the 20 km north east of Pakkoku, Pakhangyi archaeological site, was the ancient town of Pakkoku. One can still see the remnants of old city wall, well restored huge wooden monastery with 254 pillars – Pakhangyi monastery, museum and other ancient monasteries.

salaySalay, sometimes written as “Sa-le”, is a small ancient city situated about 120 km south of Bagan at the east bank of Ayeyarwaddy river. Salay is the birth place of famous poet and writer U Ponnya whose poems were well known and famous.

Mt. Popa

popaMt. Popa, about 1,518 m high, is the oasis of the arid zone situated 60 km southeast of Bagan. It stands completely alone above the low ridge of sandstone, sparsely scattered over the country, one of the National Parks in Myanmar.
